What is Glutathione?

With all the toxins we are exposed to and often put into our bodies on a daily basis, being able to combat this and detox is crucial to maintaining good health. Antioxidants are necessary to reduce oxidative stress that toxins put on the body by combating free radicals - molecules that damage your cells. Glutathione, known as the “master antioxidant” is a strong fighter that can keep your cells pure and working at their best. You can’t have a healthy body without taking care of its building blocks with this beneficial supplement.

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a natural substance that is actually a combination of three amino acids, glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and has a function in many of the body’s normal chemical reactions, such as making DNA, the building blocks of our cells and proteins. The cells already contain glutathione, but its levels can vary so it’s important to maintain a healthy amount.

The body’s supply of glutathione decreases with age since the body isn’t able to create as much, so it's especially important to make sure you have enough glutathione as you get older. Other causes of glutathione decline include stress, poor sleep and diet, toxins and infection. So the general trend - lower glutathione levels correspond with poorer health.

Why is Glutathione Important?

Sometimes the body can’t fight off free radicals on its own, especially if there’s an overload of toxins. Toxins can come from things we use and consume on a daily basis, as common as processed foods. With a lack of antioxidants to help is where oxidative stress is incurred, thus where health conditions may arise. Glutathione helps detoxify chemicals, including some that your body creates naturally, as well as environmental toxins like pollutants, and substances like drugs.

This amino acid complex is essential for the immune system to function properly, and is important for building and repairing all bodily tissues. Aside from preventing cell damage and infection, other benefits of this antioxidant can include helping to maintain heart health, helping preserve memory, promoting healthy aging as an anti-inflammatory, even contributing to possible cancer prevention.

How Should I Take Glutathione?

Taking glutathione as a supplement by mouth actually does not seem to be an effective way to have it absorbed by the body. This is because glutathione may be broken down by enzymes found in the stomach, the digestive process preventing the antioxidant from getting to the cells.

It’s also difficult to incorporate glutathione into your regular diet. This is because the amino acid complex is found in raw, unprocessed foods, things like raw or rare meat, unpasteurized milk, and freshly picked vegetables.
